I think it’s incredibly smart politically that Obama offered Clinton the Secretary of State gig. It’s unclear he really expected her to accept it but accept it she has.

On his side, he wins either way. Even if she’d declined in the end, he would have gotten credit with her passionate followers for offering her a plum job and for visibly burying the hatchet. With her, he gets all that credit plus a skillful diplomat and politician already well-known and well-respected among her peers – other world leaders.

But what’s in it for Hillary, really? She’s not the first female Secretary of State so she breaks no new ground there. She’s going to be working for the man she once fought hard against and whom even now probably thinks is less qualified to be president than she is. She’s stepping away from what would likely be a lifetime, cushy seat in the Senate. Why not stay there and hold out for a Supreme Court position.

Sure, Secretary of State means she’ll lead a huge department scattered across the globe and she’ll get to travel the world. It’ll all be very high profile – she’ll keep her name in the papers.

What I want to know is what the Clintons really want. Clearly, Hillary wants to make history. So how is Secretary of State going to be an historic stepping stone? Is it just the easy victory of repairing our image abroad and mending fences? Or is their secret plan to do something big — like peace between Israel and Palestine, a task Bill came closer to realizing than anyone before him while president. Yowza.

The bottom line though is that this kumbaya ain’t likely to last. It’s been a mighty long time since Mrs. Clinton has had a boss. She and Obama have significant differences in opinion around foreign policy — for example, he always thought the Iraq war was a bad idea and she not only supported it, but has basically said that the idea wasn’t bad, just poorly executed.

Also, there’s the question of Bill. The New York Times Sun said:

The disclosure of contributors is among nine conditions that Mr. Clinton signed off on during discussions with representatives of Mr. Obama; all go beyond the requirements of law. [...]

Mr. Clinton also agreed to submit his future personal speeches and business activities for review by State Department ethics officials and, if necessary, by the White House counsel’s office.

So let’s get this straight y’all : All of Bill’s activities will need to be approved by Hillary and if necessary, by Obama. Cue Lil Jon — HWHUT! How long do you think this heeled dog is gonna lie? How long will it be before Bill says something controversial, is naughty or violates one of those nine conditions? When has Hillary ever really been able to control Bill? Ever? He’s the kind of restless man who will act out just to get attention. Hillary gettin’ all the flash bulbs and grins? Homey don’t play that way.

We’ll see. The fireworks should be interesting to watch. I give this thing 18-24 months max but what do I know — I’ve been wrong before (cough, Biden as VP, cough).
