At a Barney Frank town hall meeting in Dartmouth, MA, a constituent asks, “Why are you supporting this Nazi policy?”

Frank responds: “On what planet do you spend most of your time?” He then calls her approach “vile, contemptible nonsense.” He closes by saying: “Trying to have a conversation with you would be like arguing with a dining room table.”

I caught this in the JJP morning open thread and burst out laughing. Then I kinda pumped my fist in the air. I mean, dayam, son: This is what we need! As an alert JJP commenter said: It’s time to put the clowns on blizzast. Man, you should see the look on that racist’s face when she’s called out. People must be willing to stand up to these nutjob bigots and hatemongers with no sense. Barney Frank is a model for all legislators holding town halls. Time to stop trying to listen and talk to crazy and just go straight to reasonable people who are sincere in wanting to understand how healthcare reform will put power back into the hands of health insurance consumers and small businesses with better coverage, more security/predictability, more choices and lower prices.

Because the truth is that Obama’s approval rating may have slipped a little to 51% (still the majority of Americans) the mainstream media appears uninterested in this factoid:

Just 21 percent approve of the GOP’s handling of health care, versus 62 percent who disapprove.

If the Obama administration can fight back on the myths and tell people the realities of his plan more effectively, we can do this and we don’t need racist, anti-Semitic conservatives to do it either.

Here’s another American hero. He’s an Israeli immigrant who talks about national healthcare in Israel and takes us to task for the humber of homeless and sick veterans on our streets. A woman shouts “Heil Hitler” at him and he turns on her: “Shame on You!” You should see the look on her face when confronted with her own hate. Naturally she tries to turn it around but the man says wisely that he’s not for Obama or against Obama but wants to talk about healthcare. He then tells a simple story that many Americans share: he was without insurance for a period and spent 2 hours in the emergency room. Cost him $8000!!! The bigot lady’s response? To mock him by crying fake tears, boo hoo. This is what these people think. That if you can’t afford healthcare, you don’t deserve healthcare. That’s not the America I know.

Note to Legislators and Media: Cease to stoop to the level of people using words like Nazi and socialism and birth certificate. Show them for who they are: desperate, unhinged, self-absorbed, wrong-on-the-facts, bigoted lunatics. Dismiss them and elevate the discourse. Americans who aren’t crazy and who really do need health insurance reform deserve nothing less. We need to start saying “Shame On You” to those who use misdirected Nazi imagery to leave Americans broke, helpless and healthless.
